I’ve been designing and developing websites for almost 9 years. Over that amount of time, a lot has changed with how websites look both aesthetically and technologically. One of the most recent sites that I have developed is Best Auto Insurance. The site’s main goal is to provide affordable auto insurance rates, it’s a consumer based website. The site design itself is somewhat minimalist due to the favoring of vector graphics and large sections of solid colors. Because the site’s sole purpose is to provide auto insurance rates, the site needed to be light weight so that the homepage and insurance rate results pages would download quickly.
I chose to code Best Auto Insurance using HTML5 and some CSS3. I could get into theories behind graceful degradation, but it’s sufficient to say the site didn’t need to render consistently in every browser. So the newer and more standards friendly your browser is, the better the site will look.
